I have a horizontal machine with two vertical heads. One of them is a high speed head that is driven from a nmtb 40 arbor. The arbor is .002 to big for the head and i need to reduce its size. I dont have a tool post grinder yet so lapping is my option.
I only have brass on hand. Will this be acceptable to use instead of the usual cast iron? Hoping so. Matt
Any metal softer than your part will make a usable lap. It needs to be softer to let the abrasive embed. The brass should be fine. Aluminum would also work if you have it. It is cheaper than brass. .002" will take a while. I hope you are a patient person.
