Just been reading an old copy of ME from December 1964 including a salute to Gems Suzor the model boat enthusiast written by Joseph Martin an ME staff writer at the time.

It seems to imply that King George VI was an amateur, possibly even a model engineer. Can anyone add any light on to this. Is it correct?

I can't really add very much to this apart from I recall reading in a book by Martin Evans titled "The World of Model Railways" almost exactly the same statement that he would 'slip away to his lathe' which I feel is rather unusual terminology. I don't know the exact publication date of Evan's book but it would have been the early sixties. Coincidence perhaps, who knows?

Thanks for that Philip – but of course as they were both staff members at ME at the same time perhaps Martin Evans could have chatted about it to Joseph Martin over a cup of tea or vice versa. Who knows?

            Thanks,

            Nick

I no longer have a copy of "The World of Model Railways" but I think it was written by Joseph Martin, not Martin Evans.

Yes you are quite correct, I've just dug out my copy and the author is indeed Joseph Martin, just shows my memory is not what it was. I did however find that it was published in 1960.

It’s admittedly a long stretch, but : Mrs G reminded me that King George III was an accomplished Ornamental Turner.

Is it conceivable that the ME story has conflated two Georges question

Fairly sure that George V1 was very much into stamp collecting and had a world class collection.
