      drill grinding rest

I have a tool rest that I should like to use either by completing as an addition to bench grinder or incorporate in tooling for my Kennet cutter grinder.

Apart from the 'primary' angle between the spindle and the vee, the spindle is offset sideways by about 5 degrees (not measured) The rod protruding behind the vee has a flat machined on its side.

This appears very similar to the Potts drill grinding toolholder but appears subtly different to photos of the Potts  (more finely cast and unpainted).

Can anyone identify it more precisely and locate drawings for associated components please?

I welcome all suggestions from those who have experience of using the Potts attachment.

Don Potts also sold drawings for people to fabricate from, so this may be a shop-made version.

Looks to be the drill carrier off a Reliance drill sharpening jig.

The relatively shallow angle between the pivot pin and the drill carrier Vee is pretty much diagnostic for the Reliance jig which carries the pivot bearing on a angled, elevating arm fixed to the bench so the effective pivot angle i shared between pin and arm. Google will find you photos, Howard Hall has a decent one as picture 2 here **LINK**

The Potts swings the drill though a near horizontal arc with the pivot bearing carried close to the bench so it has a much larger angle between pin and carrier. Hemingway still supply the kit. A small low resoluion copy of the drawings appears on their website **LINK** .

Unfortunately it appears that there are no drawings for the Reliance jig itself or a home built copy around so you will be on your own when it comes to making the missing parts. I'd think that scaling off a decent near side on picture, Howards would probably do at a pinch, would get you as close as need be to the pivot geometry.  The bottom arm angle basically sets the point angle so its not super critical.  Its the side offset of the Vee that sets the back-off, which is critical.

                John

I have a decent quality pdf of the Reliance instructions which include a good side on view of the assembled device entirely adequate to sort out the angles of the lower arm and base.

PM me if you'd like a copy.

Thanks guys, it looks like this has come off a Reliance jig then.

Taking up Clive's helpful offer I should be able to fabricate the bits needed to enable me to add this to my Kennet setup.
