My father built model steam engines. He has passed away an I’m assisting my mother in selling his machinery. He has a Holbrook either C8 or B8, as I can’t tell the difference in pictures online I’ve found. I’m unable to upload pictures here. It’s in very good condition as confirmed by two other machinists. How do I go about attaching a value to it? I’m willing to email photos.

          Kevin

Best source of advice would be the holbrook group on groups.io. Easy enough to sign up and add pictures.

Generally a B8 will have an open belt headstock whilst a C8 has a geared one. Officially the C8 was only made in electronic drive version sitting on a huge cast iron base.

The original stand for a B8 has a cast plate carrying the B8 identifier on the fast / low speed selector.

I have seen a geared headstock "C8?" factory made for bench mounting without the electronic drive. Whether that was officially a C8 or a B8 I know not. MoD Establishment machine.

Kevin – I've been looking for a B8 for a while. One sold recently on ebay for a best offer around £750. One was also for sale on Facebook for £750 too. There was a C8 for sale on ebay at £2000, but I don't think that sold. I'd be very interested in yours if it is a B8. If there are any photos, please send them. You can PM me.

              Thanks

Kevin – that's a C8 but not on its original stand and so not with its original motor system. So i assume it's been converted at some stage. Do you know what the motor is – presumably in the base and connected with a vertical belt? Depending on what the motor drive system is, I might still be interested. Roughly whereabouts are you?

You can attach photos by clicking on the camera symbol in the reply box, and then you add them from the album you've made.

                  Thanks

That's a gorgeous looking example Kevin. Worth more than any of the values quoted so far in this thread due to it's condition and the multitude accessories that can be seen. Your dad must have had great pride in his workshop.

Pay attention to the smaller items that he owned, going by what's visible in the picture it's likely that there are some valuable tools in there which you might pass over as insignificant.

Pete- Yes, he was very particular about his machine shop. I also have a Monarch 10EE an a Bridgeport head on a vertical/horizontal mill that needs to be sold. I'm sure you can imagine the volume of tooling as well

                        Excellent!

I also have a 10EE, I didn't know of anyone else in the UK that owned one until just now.

Kevin, look at the top of the page and see 'Albums, click on it and select 'Create a Photo Album' then just give your album a title and you can upload photo's.

To add it to your post just click the camera symbol above the reply box and select the photo you want to appear on the thread

Hi Kevin – whereabouts are you? I may well be interested in your Holbrook and possibly the Monarch. As has been said they are rare in the UK albeit CVA made a close copy of it. Regards, Neil.

Whoops – I guess like most I just assumed Kevin was in the UK.

Value suggestions might not be relevant for your locality Kevin, but I do wish you good luck with the disposal and hope that you'r not finding it too difficult sorting through your dad's stuff.

                                    Pete.
