Grinding spindles seem to have much care taken in their design and manufacture even exotic air bearings are sometimes fitted. Preloading to eliminate tolerances is common practice. A number of tool and cutter grinders and professional drill grinders seem to employ nothing more than the bearings of the motor with the wheels directly mounted. Although many cutter grinding tasks may not be too demanding I would think some tasks would require a stable and smooth running spindle, I imagine the motors are required to have some end float control but most general purpose motors just run in common ball races.

          Some comments

I would expect a quality cutter grinder to have good bearings rather than bog standard.

I would have thought that the limiting factor would be the balancing of the wheel. Not much point in having prescision bearings if the wheel generates a lot of vibration.

My other observation is in general mountable grinding spindles as opposed to grinding machines have very little mass. A Union or Clarkson cutter grinder is going to be less affected by the same vibrating mass as would a cross side mounted spindle.

          regards Martin
