Flying Scotsman on its way to York

Sorry Clive I wouldn't advise anyone to buy Daily Mail.

The trip to York must have taken place without involvement from West Coast Railways who provide the infrastructure for many main line steam trips, plus the Jacobite.

I hope, Martin, the issues can be sorted with West Coast before June, but it looks a bit grim for many steam trips this summer. WCR may not be involved in FS of course. Some already cancelled 2 weeks ago – Cumbrian Mountain Express with Duchess of S.

Steam run last Thursday was crewed by DB Schenker who Steam Dreams are currently in talks with to run their steam hauled trips including those hauled by Flying Scotsman, http://www.uksteam.info/tours/news.htm.

There might be a light at the end of the tunnel, but there again it could just be another train coming

I havent seen the flying scotsman (i missed the opportunity) but when i was a kid i saw another old steam train called the mallard come through my town, always remember it!

There is a link between the last two posts ! On the Bluebell in the early days there were plenty of people "stupid enough to get on train tracks when a train was coming"

Answer, open the cylinder drain cocks ! Frightens the average gricer off the tracks.

As Neal implies, the cocks are normally only opened when starting the first few moves of the day – to get rid of condensed water in the cylinders or else the incompressable water will cause trouble – like forcing the cylinder ends off !. The cocks should also be opened if the engine primes ("picking up the water" as we called it) – which could be due to dirty water causing foaming in the boiler – which fortunately was a problem we didn't have.

Tonight (7 March) at 20.30 on BBC4, there is a programme called 'The Return of Flying Scotsman.

The listing in my paper says this follows its recent return to the tracks.
