Hi Dias,

Those pictures are so extraordinary! Were the parts that remaind bright aluminium alloy or protected, or have you cleaned them. The surface effect looks very fine and even, have you been able to recover any of the tools?

Neil: Were the parts that remain bright aluminium alloy or protected, or have you cleaned them?
DC: The aluminium alloy surfaces in the shaper were not yet cleaned after the fire. Other pieces of aluminium were covered with a white powder on some areas. Please see pictures **LINK**
Neil: have you been able to recover any of the tools?
DC: I started an approach to the recovering of the precision vice firstly using fine wire wool and as result the surfaces is smooth but not bright. After that I used an hard felt wheel with a very small quantity of fine carborundum paste (valve grinding kind), but only used it after applying the wheel for a while on a sacrificial piece of steel. I like the result, so far… The vice doesn't look new any more but apparently it keeps its quality. Please see pictures **LINK**.

Hello Dias,

sorry about your fire, awful to see your Emco and other tools in the state your pictures show. I have an old Compact 8 myself and would not like to get it destroyed. From your pictures it seems your cleaning process works, but a loss of work I guess.

Hi Dias,

The fire was not agood thing, but perhaps there is a compensation in the satisfaction of being able to bring your tools back to life yourself.

Hello Thor,

Thor: sorry about your fire, awful to see your Emco and other tools in the state show your pictures. I have an old Compact 8 myself and would not like to get it destroyed.

DC: Various parts of lathe Compact 8 were stained. In some places the bus, after cleaning with steel wool, I tested rubbing half a lemon, but not as previously cleaned the oil, I find that lemon produces some effect. I have to try later when I start cleaning around. I'll use those occasion to replace the leadscrew and nut with new ones I have spares since 1982.

Thor: From your pictures it seems your cleaning process works, but the loss of work I guess.
DC: Yes hard work. I used turpentine and propanol and it seems I'm allergic to one of them. Probably allergic to propanol that I have used to clean some surfaces instead of turpentine.

DC: In a way, yes. I'll take the oportunity (or be obliged to) care of some places of the machines I don't "see" since long ago. And as I say in my previous message to Thor I'll replace the lathe leadscrew and nut.
