Filling traction engine boiler

I am in the midst of designing a 2" scale boiler for a customer who wants to build a traction engine (his own design). The drawings I have on file typically show a plug in the (smokebox) boiler end plate, but to this day ive never seen anyone fill their boiler this way. Is this now a redundant item?

If it’s at the bottom I would guess it’s the front tubeplates washout plug.

It's an MJ thing, they like the big hole at the top of the tubeplate you could do without it, none of Hainings 2" ploughing engine boiler shave one or the 2" minnie.

Fizzy,

Plugs in the firebox tubeplate are access holes for washout and inspecting the inside of the boiler.

Model steel boilers in Australia require one at the lowest point of tthe firebox and one above the tubes. (Not sure about the requirements for copper boilers but would advise to do so). Water fill points are normally at some other position.

The front tube plate (smokebox) on my 3" scale Marshall has the washout plug at the top, I use it for a hose pipe connection, the position allows you to blast all the gunge off the top of the firebox crown. Mike.
