I've got an ER40 Collet set on the way, so I thought I'd start thinking about making a holder for the Super 7. I've put a quick drawing together, no doubt something's missing or incorrect but I thought it might be worth sharing if others want a crack – check the dims yourself before you crack on.

I came to the conclusion that EN16T would be a good choice for it's relatively reasonable price, tensile strength and hardness – I would welcome suggestions here, I guess almost anything will do so long as it's not monkey metal. I put some beginners notes on the drawing regarding temper, hope it helps either beginners in the UK or people from abroad decipher the BS970 names.

(first attempt at adding a photo to my album, and also to a post…. this photo is 388kb I think)

Thanks for sharing Russ, I must find time to make something similar for my small lathe. I have a ER-32 collet chuck with MT 3, and my plan is to use just plain steel.

Looks OK, you probably want a pair of spanner flats or tommy bar hole to hold it while tightening and also to remove from spindle. Maybe worth knurling the smaller dia section as you could then hold that and just use your hand a lot of the time if using one of the bearing type closing nuts as they can be nipped up by hand if not closing the collet down too far.

John Bogs has details of making one somewhere on the web along with his other Myford nose tooling maybe on Madmodder or MEM.

I would leave it 50 mm diameter along its full length, if you then drill 2 or 3 holes in the part that screws on the spindle you can use that almost obsolete Myford C-spanner to fit it on or remove it from the spindle. Niko.

Thanks for the input and very helpful link,

I knew I'd have missed something, it was a late night/early morning drawing! I'll get it revised ASAP.

                =)
