Boxford Model B

I am about to buy a Boxford Model B lathe and I am trying to find a manual / parts list for the lathe.

it is going to need a strip down and clean.

it does not come with any change gears so I am trying to find out what changes wild have come with the lathe so i can get a full set.

Any help or information would be appreciated.

As the Boxford is a clone of the US South Bend, you should get some good info from the Yahoo Group for Southbend and clones **LINK**     Have a look in their "Files" section.

Also, the Practical Machinist forum has a very active section on South Bends. Here **LINK**

I'm sure UK members will chime in with more Boxford-specific sources.

The Boxford at first sight appears a clone of the Southbend at least for the saddle, apron and quick change gearbox. The design diverges for the headstock and the spindle, the thread on the nose being 55 deg on Boxfords and 60 deg on Southbends, one UK based supplier of nose fitting ER collet chucks didn't even acknowledge the difference.

Lots of other detail differences with the crossfeed and top slide dials too (at least two Boxford designs and possibly three)

On the apron there is a star wheel. The screw in the middle of this has a thread opposite normal so undo it the other way to avoid breaking it. Have fun getting the clutch back together.
There is a grub screw on the side of the apron that holds the half nut lever I think it is that has a second grub screw deep down the hole.
The shoe that runs in a groove in the bull wheel to engage back gear probably needs renewing – just file it up from brass bar no need to buy one.
Is it a B or a BUD?

Stand to be corrected but there should be nothing literature wise you need for a strip and basic rebuild that isn't available for free from the yahoo group.

There are also scanned copies of the Boxford 'Know Your Lathe' manual floating around online maybe on the yahoo group, with chancers selling bound scans for silly money on ebay

I think the last Boxford reprint would be in the 1980's and its long been out of print.

Alternatively the genuine thing should be here 2nd hand for about 20 quid delivered

Did you have any luck finding a manual for the Boxford Model B as I have this model and have problems with the cross slider and could do with a manual before dismantling

The manual is called ‘know your lathe’ and is available as a free download. A copy is on the facebook Boxford user group, also here;  https://groups.io/g/BoxfordLathe-UserGroup. Both groups are free to join. If you don’t want to join either of them, message me your email and I’ll send you the PDF.

Most important – the screw holding the “STAR” wheel on is left hand thread !  Otherwise strip down is pretty simple.
