I see that the USA now appears to be the main hot-spot for coronavirus.

Looking at the data currently (11:00 GMT on Sunday 22 March) on **LINK** , and on the pages linked from there for individual countries, USA is making rapid headway up the chart.

Future projected levels must be approximate, but:

China currently has 81,054 cases, daily increase around 0.05%, so expect around 81,200 in 4 days time

Italy has 53,578 cases, increasing around 14% per day, so around 90,000 cases in 4 days time

USA has 27,111 cases, but increasing around 35% per day, so also around 90,000 cases in 4 days time

So by next weekend, the USA looks headed to be the worst affected country in terms of total number of confirmed infected cases.

I suspect the figures are generally very suspect, in terms of unreported (and generally milder) cases. For example, Italy has a very high death rate, implying true infection rates are much higher.

I better not comment about leadership of the USA! devil

It also cannot help that the USA does not have a modern healthcare system freely available to all, as is available in Europe.

So will it then be "the American Virus" ?

And yes, their ultra neo-liberal healthcare system is a major contributor to the rapid spread. Too many people cant afford to go a doctor when they get symptoms. Let alone go into hospital for actual treatment.

Getting serious here in Oz too. Our prime minister just did a Boris and closed all pubs and restaurants nationwide. And beaches. But schools, most workplaces and public transport will carry on as per normal. So you can't walk up the beach in the fresh air, but you can sit in a crowded bus or train for an hour. Huh?

So I can see some serious amounts of shed work coming up. Weather has just cooled of nicely for it too. Must get down the steelyard and get some angle iron to build that new lathe bench before they close down.

Having a decentralised Health Care system outside government control is a serious disadvantage when dealing with an epidemic. Although US hospitals and doctors are no doubt individually excellent, there's no consistency between them, no-one to report to, and no-one able to organise a coordinated response. Add to that treatment depending on Insurance and the many US States were people must work because there is no Statutory Sick Pay, and conditions favour the virus rather than people.

As in the UK, where the Chancellor of the Exchequer has gone from 'There is no magic money tree' to 'We will do whatever it takes', including paying everybody's wages! I'd expect the US Government to abandon free-market preferences in favour of heavy government subsidies, social control, and tight management of markets. The issue is how quickly they can respond in the emergency; too slow means big trouble, and this is an example were mobilising the private sector can't fix the problem.

Just a comment, I'm against extreme politics of any type. Right and left-wing dogmas are both doomed to fail. What's needed is balance; where right-thinking doesn't cut the mustard, governments should reach for the left-toolbox and vice versa.

Interesting times. I've got my fingers crossed!

              Dave

PS Listened to "The Archer's" today. Excellent fun to be had from a daily soap opera made a couple of months ago. In Ambridge, Grey Gables have had to cancel hotel bookings only because of the kitchen disaster, and the world crisis has completely passed them by. No-one has mentioned Coronavirus let alone been effected by it. No lock down, no shortages, and the elderly and infirm are taking no precautions. I'm thinking of moving there!

60 million people with no healthcare. What could possibly go wrong

On the plus side the USA can become a police state with martial law imposed as quick as you like

                  We live in interesting times

I understand Linda is out of the woods? Ironic if she makes it but the panto is cancelled due to coronavirus…

Before dishwashers ruined BBC Radio 4 I listened regularly at the sink, now I dip in and out.

I missed the actual explosion, but I'm picking up hints that Linda may have had something to do with it. She's acting guilty about something. As Ambridge are having a major crime wave I suppose slavery is only to be expected. I bet Brookfield Farm will be growing organic Coca for an Albanian Cartel and selling Assault Rifles in the Village Shop next…

Listened to the news tonight and I have to admit Boris has gone up in my esteem but those, I can only call them morons, gone out for the day to the beach or to climb Snowdonia! How much contact will they have had with others, both at wherever they are but also, possibly, on the journey there and back and then Sunday football and fitness training, the one saying saying yes but it's fresh air as he does pull ups on shared equipment with bare hands.

The mentality of these people leaves me grasping for words that can be printed angry

Having done 30 years in the police I'm glad I'm out of it for this particular issue.

We police by consent but that means morons have latitude to say I dont consent to being told what to do,even for their own good.

Maybe this will change society but I seriously doubt it.

Just had a mail from Trade point at B&Q saying due to large numbers of people buying domestic DIY stuff they are cutting opening times, limiting numbers in store and having staff enforce social distancing. So people are using their time to do up the house. Clever.

CBC News is running an "investigative" story line to the effect that local supermarkets etc should be limiting quantities of, at least some, goods to prevent hoarding. The same as they do for items that are on-sale.

Strikes me that if they did that, you'd then have masses of people buying the limit in one store, then proceeding to the next for another load …. and so on.

I'm appalled at society's reaction. The old lady (94), across the road, has had a constant stream of visitors, our neighbour's had a family party (2 of the attendees work as nurses, 1 is a doctors receptionist).

People need to grasp the seriousness of this situation and stop being so bloody selfish.

Glen and I have decided to work alternate days thereby keeping CuP Alloys open and complying with social distancing in these terrible times. Of course this post might not age well as the government may lock us all down shortly, but until that happens if you are 'self isolating' or 'socially distancing' yourselves in your workshop CuP are open fas usual or all your brazing and soldering material and equipment needs.

Whatever you are doing please, please follow government advice and stay safe.

                                            Too right there!

Simply look at the statistics and put them into perspective.

Deaths relate to, say, diagnosed cases a week ago (it may be a little less, of course)

19% of the population is over 65.

19% of those cases (of a week ago) were OAPs – an assumption, of course.

75% of those are now dead (very few casualties below this age group)

If there are two of you, in that demographic, in your household, and are ‘at risk’, it means that it is very likely that at least one (or both) will succumb if you both get the virus. Chilling statistics for us oldies.

The morons who are helping the spread by not social distancing, or are simply just not changing their ways at all, are doing us no good at all. That includes the hoarders (certainly from now onwards).

Early days yet but most of the casualties look like people who nature says should be dead but the miracle of science has kept them alive

We'll soon see if this pans out

Relatively speaking, third world casualties will be much lower than western world casualties if this is the case
