Hi this is my first post on the website so hello to everyone, I am looking for advice about my colchester bantam lathe it is a mk1 two speed machine and had an issue with the leadscrew not working when I bought it. Does anybody have a manual and parts list for this machine? I am in need of a small part for the screcutting gearbox but I don’t know what it is called but it is a link which connects two gears together, its a bit like a washer with two teeth either side which are 180 degrees apart on each side and offset by 90 degrees with the ones on the other side – apart from this the gearbox is fine and I can fit it up if I get the part.
      Cheers
      Tim

Just got a single speed one myself. Manual is

There is a small clutch on the lead screw, is that engaged. Next to gearbox.

I'd call that a sliding dog.

These are the pictures of the broken coupling and the gearbox, the broken coupling joins the two gears together on the right hand side of the middle shaft which will in turn drive the gear on the right hand side of the top shaft which will turn the leadscrew. I also need to get a part for the ABC change lever – there is a cam shaped part which you can see in the photo but it needs another part to actually mesh the gears on the left side of the top shaft. Thanks everyone for the manual and parts list info I have part numbers for the parts I need – just need to find them now!.

If you cannot source the part, you may be reduced to measuring the broken parts and then making a new one, always supposing that

                a) The lathe is operable without the failed component

                b) You have access to a mill.

Although if the lathe is operable, mounting the raw material on a vertical slide, or in the toolpost, with an end mill in the chuck. The first side should be relatively easy, but because of problems holding, the second side will be more difficult, certainly looks to me like some light cuts, .

If all else fails, throw yourself on the mercy of a local Model Engineer!

                Best of luck!

                Howard

we have a lathe and mill at work so I might have a go at making the part there on sunday if we are quiet, for me the tough bit would be milling the notches on each side exactly 90 degrees apart.
