I want to clad a cylinder with wood strips , there is an irregular gap underneath them . What would be a good filler ? fire clay maybe or bathroom sealant has been mentioned , any ideas ?

Is it just for a show engine runing on air or one that will be steamed?

For air running I just leave the void and the strips bear on the two end flanges, if on steam then the space is best insulated for best efficiency, bit of Kaowool or similar will do nicely.

probably only test steaming , nothing too serious , trying to get the strips to fit between the flanges , so not a firm base to work on

In that case you can make a couple of rings of MDF, split them into two or 3 bits and glue them on and then finally shape to suit. I've done this on larger cylinders where the span between flanges is quite large.
