I'm missing a few gears from my Churchill Redman lathe and was wondering if anyone knew where i could get some spares ones or some that are compatable with another lathe?

          HI Anthony,

Try poking around on THIS website. It may hold the answer, but even if not it will probably tell you much about your lathe.

Thanks, I have checked this already. Now looking at possibly making my own. Found some good info on the Internet. It looks straight forward enough. Any one else tried making gears?

              Hi Anthony,

I have made extra change gears (module 1) for my Emco lathe. I used homemade cutters and a homemade dividing head. The process isn't difficult. Ivan Law's book: Gears and Gear Cutting explains both the theory behind gears and how to make gear cutters and gears.

Thanks, I'll check that book out ASAP. Just wondering if most milling adapters for most lathes? Mine is rather old at 80 years!

As Thor says, it's straight forward. I normally use the Ivan Law method to make cutters, but I filed a cutter for 1MOD gears by eye from gauge plate (see the latest MEW for details).

Making spur gears is simple, like this:

                    pinion_gears_2.jpg

And a few more gears with the mandrels and gauges used to make them:

                    pinion_gears_1.jpg

I've found that Ivan Law's book is great for spur gears, but falls down a bit on more advanced gears such as bevel and helical gears.

I expect you'll have no problem working out what the DP, or possibly Module, is of your existing gears, but the pressure angle may be a bit more of an issue. It may be 14.5°, or 20°, depending upon how 'stick in the mud' the manufacturers were.

                    Regards,

                    Andrew

                      Or like this,
