best tooling for ML7

Hi can anybody please advise best cutting tools to use on an ML7 please? Im using a quick change tool post that only works with 8mm tools thanks

Use 1/4 inch HSS. You might find 8mm is above centre height though I'm not a Myford user so don't know but a lot of people make the mistake of assuming that bigger is better and if there is a big slot it just has to be filled to capacity.

Use 1/4" / 6 mm tools there is much less grinding to do when making the tool, and on going sharpening. You can use the thicker tools but you may have to lower the cutting edge to get centre height, waist of HSS, and money.

Dare I suggest that replaceable tip tools are not really suitable for a ML7. They are really meant to be used at high speed with rigid machines.

My vote would go for HSS, 6mm or 1/4 inch being about the biggest that you can fit without going above centre height.

Plus, tipped tools are less forgiving than HSS, they chip easily on interrupted cuts, and that can be expensive. A £4 piece of HSS will give a lot more than a tip for the same cost in that way. (Don't think about parting tool tips at nearly a tenner each if you have a dig in!)

I have Diamond tool holders on all three lathes. The one on the Ml7 is not the size you would buy for it, being 12 mm shank, but it works perfectly well.

+1 for diamond (tangential) tools, either bought or shop made.

Used almost all the time, except for roughing out. Will take cuts from 0.0005" up to 0.100" quite happily.

Another vote for the Tangential tool. Most of my turning is done with one and once you have the tool holder 1/4” HSS for it is cheap enough. They aren’t difficult to make either if you have a mill.
