Have any of you seen any abrasive belt splicing tape for sale? I've got quite a few metres of abrasive roll I'd like to use if I can but really dont like scarfed joints. I realise the stuff the professionals use is "special" and can't possibly be used by amateurs like us but there must be something suitable out there!? I've tried glass reinforced tape but it just comes unstuck!

Glue which needs a heatgun can be quite strong, I know nothing specific though

              Hi Vic,

You will need a high impact cross weave tape, Not sure if its available to the consumer market, only reason I know is I work on the machines that have to unwind/rewind it into the rolls the rest of industry uses

              Sorry its not much help

              cheers

                Hello Vic

Amazon sell it in one and two roll quantities. It isn't cheap at up to £8 a roll but other suppliers offer industrial quantity packages of dozens of rolls at a time.

It might be worth taking a plunge

                  Hello Vic,

Thanks to Trevorh you now know what to look for. Amazon sell it in one or two roll quantities at around £8 a roll but at least you don't have buy a crate of them!

It might be worth taking a punt at it.

                  Brian

Your search "high impact cross weave tape" did not match any products

Can you be more specific please?

                      Hello ega,

I just put that into a search and up came all kinds of suppliers, including Amazon. How did you know I had searched anyway?

                        Brian Wood:

Perhaps I should have been more specific! I permed Trevorh's "high impact cross weave tape" with your reference to amazon, searched on amazon and came up with the negative result I quoted in my post. A google search does indeed throw up items on amazon and they do look like the tape I have seen on commercial abrasive bands.

What I was after was a more positive indication of a particular product which will do the job.

As to your question, I don't think I had a view as to whether you had searched or not.

Is it a flat belt or round? if its round i have some 5mm that you cut and warm the ends on then press together which is quite strong?

Is this tape hazardous or is there some other reason that this tape is not available to purchase by individuals?

Apart from the description you have given does the tape actually have a name that would help one find a supplier? even a manufacturers name would help… please.

On some belts the material is just clear plastic… Maybe Mylar.
Count me in if you find a supplier.

                                  .

This is a wild guess, but; could that be Kapton tape [the very strong, very thin, heat-resistant stuff that they use inside laptop computers, etc.] … a golden brown colour.

Only stuff I've found is the industrial stuff but it's only got a shelf life of 90 days even stored at minus 20° so no use to the DIY'er.

                                        Hi Ian,

Its not hazardous just Industry strength and as usual not normally commercially availble

Example is that you can't purchase the adhesive tape used to fix your car dash board in place

                                        its a similar tape

With regard to generic names – not really its a case of depending on the manufacturer they each apply a number or brand to it

3M uses numbers for ID, Advanced tapes (Leicester) use Alpha numeric and so on

I will see what I can get for you
