      Hello from Canada !

A pal of mine in the UK has acquired a backgear for me for my in-pieces Raglan 5". Seeing as the shipping would take some time and probably cost a fortune, I am wondering if anyone on here might be coming to Canada in the not too distant future and would be able to stuff it in their luggage for me. I am on the east coast (New Brunswick) but do have people in Ottawa, and Toronto that could be pressed into service for pickup in those cities. This thought just popped into my mind now and I hope this is the proper forum to post such things. If not, many apologies !

      Thanks very much,

      Lewis

          Hell Lewis,

It's a perfectly good use of the forum! I'd be quite happy to do the task, if you have three return tickets to spare

Actually Lewis, the last box we sent to family in Toronto (by "the lowest cost route" at our local Post Office) didn't seem that expensive and got there in a week or two – my wife was delighted.

May have be an anomaly of course..

            Regards,

            IanT

Yep not that expensive or slow, putting 500g parcel into Royal Mail will give £8.00GBP and 5-7 working days, probably take as long and cost as much for your pal to send the gear to another person in the UK!

I get stuff sent to Oz from UK by Royal Mail pretty regularly and it's quite cheap, much cheaper than US to Oz. Royal Mail has an online international calculator that you can work out exactly how much, if you know approximately the weight. But I think under 2kg travels pretty cheap as "small packet" rate. Most lathe parts and ME tools seem to fit that bracket.

Hopper is right. Royal Mail has very economic pricing up to 2 Kg, after that it gets expensive even in UK, such that these days I always use a courier for 5 Kg items (and not one of the cheapos either).

                    Hi again –

Thanks for all the tips fellows. I am going to dig out my broken backgear and weigh it – then check the royal mail website. It's not a small gear, but might be below the 2kg.

Neil – you are as bad as my wife. She suggested a trip to the UK so we could spend 1000s and pick up the gear while we were there !

                    Cheers,

                    Lewis

                      +1.

Get stuff sent here all the time from the UK via Royal Mail. Must be below 2kgs – very reasonable. Hardly ever order anything that weighs more – gets very very expensive.

Couriers (UPS, Fed Ex, DHL et al) are a complete rip off this end, and i avoid at all costs.

Not got one handy, but the bull gear weighs over 2kg so I would not expect it to weigh less than than 2kg.

Same here I deal with most countries and Canada one of the better ones sending stuff to and receiving.

Even if did find some one will add cost posting £6-£9 on the cheap within UK to someone that could carry over, then process of sending, meeting and or travelling to destination whilst there.
Could choose Hermes within UK but would take longer than sending Royal Mail International usually 4-5 days from past experience.

Russias slowest by far two weeks air mail, NZ 2 days regularly, US a lottery used to be 5 days 11 years ago now around 9 min to 15 days or months in customs.

Just a follow up to sort of "close out" this thread. I now have the gear in my hands ! It turned out I emailed a buddy in Toronto telling him I was coming for a visit – unrelated to this gear. He emailed back telling me he was in the UK visiting the in-laws ! I quickly had the gear posted to him, he jammed it into his luggage about 1-2 days later, and more luck – I was still in Toronto when he landed ! We met, did the hand-off, and the next day I was in the car doing the 15 hour drive back to the east coast ! Lots of luck involved here, but it all worked out.

                            Cheers,

                            Lewis
