A converted electric motor

I'v converted a 5W 230V shaded pole motor, its a 6 pole motor, so designed to run at 850rpm. I replaced the squirel cage armature with a permanant magnet, claw type one similar to that found in a car alternator. Running it with the lathe, it produces 80V, and about 5W.More pics in the album. Hi Swafe, I had a look at the shading coils, and desided that the only way I could remove them, or even just cut them to make an open coil would be to remove the main coils, and as they are OK I can't be bothered doing a rewind, even though its a very simple one.

If I did do a rewind at some later date, I would use a heavier gauge wire , and maybe reduce the voltage, I run it through a transformer, dropping it to 12V. Ian S C

Ran the alternator on the S 9 today, and using a transformer to drop the volts to just over 12V was able to light up a 3W (I think, its out of a car dashboard) lamp quite bright, one of those ones with the wires out the end and folded back, its about 20 mm long x 10 mm dia. An engine, I feel must have something to drive if you are going to run it, and an alternator / or generator are a nice clean thing to run, one of my Hot Air Engines drives a water pump, and another a small power hacksaw, but power with a light, or a radio attracts attention.
