My local ISP has been giving me problems so I resorted to using my tablet for backup Internet communications. It is a Lenovo Tab3 8Plus that I purchased for use with my flying camera (drone) so that maps and flysafe data is readily available. As a result I installed a 12 month Sim. With a data only account this cost $125Au (about 50 squids).

As I don't fly the drone very often I thought about all the wasted paid for data so linked it to my laptop (USB tethering, but WiFi hotspot and Bluetooth link works also) and voila – reliable internet for a fraction of the cost of my greedy ISP.

      Then I heard about this

Some towers here in Australia are already in place so bring on the phones.

This is going to be quite a communications revolution IMHO and a lot of traditional ISP's are going to be forced to reduce prices before they fade away.

      Welcome to the future surprise

And when they have faded away? The prices will rise when they have a monopoly! Or we might find that all the extra electromagnetic waves, we are subjected to, are causing health issues for the planet occupants… probably further progress from pigeon post, mind!

I've got two mobile phones, a proper "dumb" phone and a smartphone I use for work only

I've only used the smartphone for myself a couple of times, to find a store in a nearby town about 10 miles away

I got bombarded by adverts on the internet and it took about 5 minutes of serious poking and prodding before it actually did what I wanted

The same thing would take 30 seconds on a computer with about 6 clicks, tablets are great compared to smartphones and there are still quite a few early windows bargains out there

Given this, I think you can wait for a while before any 5G phones or tablets are available to the public.

Strange that it is in Perth , those poor buggers over in WA are usually the last to get anything ! We just got the ( so called ) high speed broadband run up to the house and i thought i had seen it all until the guy used a chainsaw to dig the trench for the couduit ! Front lawn still looks a mess after 4 months !

Pleased to say I didn't understand a single word of the original post! I don't own a phone, and the internet is something 'she' organises. Posting on here is me at the bleeding edge of my tech world.

                  Happy, innocent, and free.

Can't see the need for these speeds. A normal tv picture only needs 3Mbps, and HD tv 8Mbps but on a phone or tablet there is no need for the resolution so 1/4 of that is more than is necessary. What you need is the unlimited quantity.
The speed test on my cable connection can show >200Mbps but wifi connectivity cuts that down to 100 at 2.4GHz. Doesn't matter as the delays in loading forum pages are from the server or my laptop going into grumpy mode for a few seconds.

As always with cellular people only look at the gross rate at the base station. The 1 Gbps or whatever it is is shared amongst all users in the cell and will be reduced anyway for users with poorer signal strength.
