Just wondering if anyone has had any experience of using a single phase motor soft starter to give a smoother start up of a lathe. I am thinking about the items which are available on ebay for between £20 and £30.

      Thanks

      Bob

It is a standard capacitor start motor 1/3rd hp, it is fitted to my Southbend 9 lathe. Amazon sell the devices as well

I like the soft start I get with the VFD on my miller but don’t want to go to the expense of fitting the same to the lathe

I’d never heard of them either, but Mrs Google led to Farnell. Not cheap at £66 plus vat, but this is a 25A model, perhaps lower rated availabe
