Even better seems to be OnlyOffice

Seems to be compatible with other MS Office document formats, is free, ahd its UI is virtually identical to Microsoft365.

I bought a new Windows 11Pro PC a little while ago, specifically from Mesh Computers.
I came up with a slightly customised spec, based on one of their standard builds, and save the quote on their website.

A little while later, I had a call from them to discuss the possible order; the tech at their end suggested I could probably save some money with a lower spec graphics card, as I wasn’t into gaming.
He also recommended a slightly tower cheaper case than I’d picked.
We had a sensible discussion, where I explained the reasons for that card, based around AI noise reduction and masking, for a specific photo processing package; the image is processed by the GPU on the graphics card, as it’s more suited to that type of number crunching.
He took details of the program, DxO Optics Photolab, and concurred I’d probably made the best choice.

It was refreshing to see a knowledgeable retailer who was genuinely trying to save me some money.

The PC arrived promptly, particularly considering it is a one off build, at a good price.

I also use Libre office, with Thunderbird for eMails.
It’s possible to get a Microsoft office single installation for a one-off price, which makes it a lot cheaper than 365, but I went with Libre anyway.

Hi JohnF, My Office Home and Student 2007, works OK on my Windows 11, if that’s any help, but if yours doesn’t work, you can always uninstall it.

If you are ‘getting a few’ for a business then the cloud based solutions give you options for cenralised management including security… but you have to pay for it. Starts to get more and more important as #users grows – maybe >20 users then really could do with central management.

Personally I use the free tier of Google for most apps and am continually impressed, never frustrated. The collaboration features (e.g. simultaneous editing of same document) are a game-change in a multi-user environment. You get this on the free tier.

I like the idea of the micro all-in-one pcs that save a lot of space. They are very portable too, so long as you have spare monitors at each location and are a viable alternative to laptops if just home working and office working are your main locations. But probably most businesses that have any significant number of moblie users or remote working users standardise on laptops.

You can still buy a stand-alone licence for Microsoft Office without using the cloud-based subscription version:

For business use, I would go down this route.  I know many people like Libre Office but you will run into minor incompatibilities, and you have to ask if it’s worth the hassle of running something different from all your customers.
