New lathe and miller

Hi all ,

Just a quick one (maybe),i an new to metalwork ,are the toys spg sell ok seem a good price for what you get not that i know much just need a machine for learning and generally geting used to things,looking at a sp2124 and a milling machine not sure which yet.any advice would be good.

Just bear in mind when comparing with other suppliers of similar machines that others come with a 4-jaw chuck, fixed and travelling steadies and a faceplate. All essential IMHO.

Also it is not clear if that model has an inverter drive motor or the earlier variable speed DC motor. You should make sure that it is inverter drive.

Phil,

I spent much time trying to determine which lathe represented best value….

I ultimately went with SPG and bought the 2129 lathe….

Ok it didnt come with a 3 ph motor/vfd….but it cost £1715 delivered and included a stand, and various accessories that others charge for ( Toolco for instance….)

So bearing in mind the price I paid, I changed the motor and added a vfd, I still had change from £2k.

Toolco had the vfd version for just under, plus another £180 or so for the stand plus delivery and no extras like 4 j chuck, steadies etc…

Warco wanted £2650 ish for their version…..,

So if you are savvie enough, you could do your own conversion….btw my spindle is 38 mm bore and takes D1-4 accessories….😀

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the forum.

The 2124 is slightly smaller than my 290 lathe (SP2129). My lathe has a 3-phase motor and inverterdrive, I am very satisfied with motor and inverter.

My milling ,machine is very similar to the SPG 2217 III LV. Mine has MT3 spindle since I already had a lot of MT3 tooling, you may want the R8 version.

Hi if i went for mt3 for the mill couldn't i use the collet set on the lathe as well if that has mt3 spindle?That 2217 mill is the one i was looking at.

In a word yes…..

You would need a drawbar for the lathe to hold the chuck in the taper…that is if the lathe has the same mt taper size
