I am having a problem with the Flat Belt on this Lathe ( 80 inches long 1 1/2 inches wide ). It is running to the outside edge of the gearbox input pulley and some of the belt is then coming off the motor drive pully by about 1/2 inch. I have checked and double checked the alignment of the two pulleys and they seem to be correct. The input pulley is not flat across it's width more like an inverted V shape with the apex more towards the gearbox side of the pulley, should this pulley be flat across it's width, the pulley is 2 inches wide.

A flat belt pulley should be slightly crowned so that it is a larger diameter in the centre: this makes the belt tend to stay on the right place on it's pulley. If the belt has a joining device it needs to be fitted squarely so that the belt's circumference is the same on both edges. Colin

Can re-crown by turning very shallow taper on both sides, with apex in center, then file at the apex. Done hundreds of large pullies like that.

Thanks very much for your replies, I have it sorted now, the belt I was using was in very bad condition, I have a new belt on now and all is ok.
