I need to bend a piece of 5/16 x 5/16 x 1/16 brass angle to go round my boiler which ir 5" dia. Ive tried heating and bending it but it goes all shapes – what do I do?

Turn it out of a 6" slice of brass

I think the usual way is to use bending rolls with a slot for the upright of the angle.

I find angle tends to be brittle and reluctant to bend even when annealed. I would start with a ring of 16-gauge brass plate between two formers with a suitable hole in and beat up the flange.

            Hi fizzy,

I am fairly sure that there have been a couple of articles in ME in recent years on this, using a slot in a bending rolls roller to accomodate one web of the angle and it was brass being bent. Sorry I cannot be any more help – you need to use an online index to find it . I think one method was bending rolls, as above and the other was several (3?) rolling/bending discs mounted in a small vice – jaw like arrangement.

            Rgds, John.

The other method is to bend a 1/4×1/16 strip to the curve you want, lay it on a piece of 1/16 plate and silver solder. Trim the inside flush with the upstand and then use odd legs to mark 5/16 width and again cut and file to shape. The two steel angles above the axle here were done that way
