        Hi,

I hope someone can help, I would like to alter the gear ratio on the Clayton wagon i am attempting to build, I have heard of one such conversion which had a layshaft with a dog clutch on it. if i drive of the crank with a 10t on to a 20t which would be on the layshaft, then another 10t of the layshaft on to the final drive of 40t this would i think give a reduction of 8-1, as opposed to the original 4-1,( I hope someone corrects me if i am wrong) Conversely by substituting the 20t for a 30t would give a reduction of 12-1, which should i go for? and now we have chosen which sprocket to go for where would i get one from ( dont tell me to make one as i wouldnt no how) Oh and seeing as this is my first post go easy on me!

        Thanks in anticipation

        Phillip

          Hi Philip

I bought some 8mm chain and sprockets off ebay. So cheap less than £10 for two sprockets and a meter of chain, to do the same job. I am also going to fit a clutch. (not sure when?) But i think i am going to extend the crank shaft to accept the clutch.

You don't want to know how to make a sprocket, so heres how I made one for the power feed on my mill. I got a disc of steel the right thickness, and marked it out for the twenty teeth I wanted, I then drilled holes for each tooth of the correct size, then cut the teeth with a hacksaw, and finished of with a file, I did'nt have a clue how to go about doing it back then, just did it.
