      Hello everyone,

Hello everyone. Sad reason to join, but I wonder if you can advise me.

My father had a workshop which I need to clear following his passing. I wish I had time and space to use his tools myself, but don't have time or space.

There's a lathe and min-mill and a horizontal metal bandsaw. I don't really want to dump them if they could be useful to someone, or would sell. Are these things any use still? Would they sell?

Dad often had a copy of model engineer to read, so I thought I'd ask here. Any advice please?

          Hello Justin,

A sad time and job for you.

NO; DON'T dump the machines, the tools, and measuring equipment.. They are quite useable and therefore valuable.

Do protect them so that they don't go rusty.

          Whereabouts are you?

If you can find your local Model Engineering Society, someone there would be able to help you by identifying things, and giving an estimate of value. They will also help you to give an more accurate description and specification of the machines.

When it is all over, a donation to their funds would be appreciated, no doubt..

A dealer will offer less that you could get from a direct sale, since they have to make a living.

If you accumulate sufficient posts on here, you could advertise in the "Classifieds" on here.

Thank you, Howard. Thank you for your reply – much appreciated.

I can see that there's a society in Lincoln which is probably closest, so I'll get in touch with them.

I'd love to take part in the forums more, as they seem so friendly – just wish I had some engineering knowledge to offer!

Hi Justin was your dad a member and if so what is his name or handle on here. There are a few members on here from around Lincoln maybe they could help.

Hi David, no he wasn't on these forums. He might have been a member back in the 70s/80s, I couldn't be sure though – He could have been buying through the newsagents. I've just seen Model Engineer around a fair bit.

Hi Justin, if you want to post pictures of anything you want rid of, people can tell you what it is and a rough value, what you've posted already will sell no problem, small machines go quickly as they are easy to transport.

Don't dump anything, they'll be someone out there who will find a use for most things.

Thank you, I'll do that. Is this the right thread to do that, or should I post somewhere else?

                      Hello again,

Thanks for the offer of rough values. Could someone give me an estimate of a fair price for the machines in the first post?

The boxford lathe, as far as I can tell, is from the mid/late 50s.

The Warco mini mill is, I think, from about 2005.

                      Thank you!

Sorry to hear of your loss always a difficult time.

A possibly similar model Warco sold on eBay in May for £690 it looked nice in the photos.

No guarantee what another one would fetch but I have included a link here so you can check it out model wise etc.

                          Hi again Justin,

The milling machine is an old model sieg x2, it has the small table and column that pivots from the base, the new model sell brand new for £820 with a bigger table, fixed more rigid column, and brushless motor, and of course a warranty, so I'd say yours is worth £400.

The lathe, I sold a mk3 metric underdrive for £700 6 months ago, so I'd say yours is probably in the £600 region, depends what you have with it?

Hopefully that gives you a rough guide, you can always put it to auction, some people pay £1200 for sealey branded x2 Mills that are the old versions as yours is, I can't explain this, but after seeing 3 jaw lathe chucks being used as milling machine chucks, nothing surprises me any more.
