      Hi All,

Just after anymore ideas to try and fix woes, the issue is when threading it will randomly move x axis and z axis in a zigzag movement stalling the x axis motor. other times it will run perfectly for 3 or 4 passes.

Machine is running Mach3 on win XP on PP running gecko G251s windows has been optimised, it's a vertical milling machine which i have mounted the chuck in the spindle to run as a lathe. The machine runs faultless in milling or x/z turning. Index true speed and spindle speed are very close less then 10% reading.

      Things I've tried

      Adjust debounce
Tried running in exact stop mode
Slow down feed rate and acceleration on x and z axis ( really slow )
      G76 code from threading wizard
running G32 code with g04 p5 dwell at start of threading
uninstall version .66 / delete mach folder in c drive / reinstall version .62 used default screen sets
increase kernel speed up 45000hzs increase acceleration and feed

All the above has had no impact on solving the issues. My gut feeling is it's like Mach is sending out these move commands without using acceleration and feed rate setting. I attached a couple of images of the toolpath before and after

P.S. I have cut threads on this machine in the past about 5 years ago.

Any Information would be gratefully received

Not all controllers used with Mach3 will do thread cutting. You need a spindle feedback to the controller of one pulse per rev. Smoothsteppers do threading but a lot of others just don't work. Check with your controller supplier if it is one that works with Mach3 threading.

Adam says that he is using the parallel port, so the "controller" isn't an issue.

I assume that you are using Mach 3 Mill to control the machine. This is significantly different from Mach 3 Turn. Turn expects a single pulse per rev from the spindle to synchronise the feed, and knows pretty accurately the exact spindle speed. You may well have updated the Mach 3 version, and so anything that worked on a previous version may not work now. For example it would be unlikely that they would check that all the turning G codes were correctly supported in a Mill version.

IIRC I am using Mach 3 Turn .062 and it works as expected. If you construct a Turn profile for your machine, and you have a spindle index pulse, it should work but obviously there will be some aspects that make life difficult, such as aligning the Y axis which doesn't exist in Turn.

Also you say "Windows has been optimised" – what does that mean?

Another thing is my Dad, John Stevenson, did a lot of testing with threading and we found that the single pulse cannot be delayed as this can cause the Z axis to stop or jump, the X axis should not be moving during the pass for a straight thread. You need to use turn for treading as Mill only uses the spindle pulse for speed control.
