        Hi.

I have been turning some 15"dia stainless plate and the lathe keeps slowing down and stopping.

My immediate thought was that the motor was overheating, not so. my next thoughts were the clutch. I know the mk 1 1/2 has a working clutch, but where that is (the top belt pulley area) is getting hot.

Is their any friction material stuffed into that area that might be giving me grief

        Thanks

        Alan

You can have a clutch fitted

does your motor run then when you lift the start handle the spindle starts?

or when you lift the handle does the motor start? And the spindle?

if you don’t have a clutch you should have a brake in the pulley area which could be giving problems

but first I’d look at your drive belt/s

The top belt pulley has the brake mechanism inside it, sounds like it is binding, the clutch, if fitted, is inside the headstock, from what you describe, the brake needs adjusting, when you push the handle down to stop the lathe, if you keep pushing it applies the brake.

The clutch if fitted is outboard of the pulleys away from the headstock

dsc02094 (medium).jpgYou can see it out of focus behind my home made brake…if you have a clutch you cant have a brake usually
