      Ubuntu 16.10 Upgrade

Yesterday the option to upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 16.10 popped up on my computer. Normally I wait a month or two before taking a new release so that other people find the bugs first and any bad ones get fixed before I upgrade.

Past experience with Ubuntu upgrades has been very positive, so last night I had an outbreak of WTH and pressed the button.

The upgrade went smoothly and – so far – I haven't found anything that's failed.

BUT. There is a boot error where the message "No Symbol Table Press any key to continue" appears. On my cable connected Intel machine pressing any key has the desired effect and thereafter everything works. The bug has been reported and a fix is available but be aware that for the moment it apparently causes WIFI to fail on Intel machines (but probably not AMD boxes), or "pressing any key" rather than waiting patiently causes the boot to fail.

Although I haven't found anything else (yet) I have a lot of software loaded and it will take a while to work through it. QCAD, Freecad, Email, Firefox and LibreOffice are all looking good after basic testing.

Has anyone else had any problems?

        Regards,

        Dave

May I claim a prize for starting the most boring thread ever?

I've used the new version of Ubuntu for a month now and, apart from the 'No symbol table' message mentioned above, I haven't been able to find anything wrong with it. Ubuntu is, of course, British…

Dave – it is boring – the stuff just works.

I have had to use a specific version of Internet Explorer for filling in a time sheet – so I loaded virtualbox, put in an XP iso, and once a week crank it up to enter my timesheet – all "within" Ubuntu linux.

When that company eventually moves to a standard HTML versioned timesheet system, the virtualbox will get forgotten about.

Of course, most of my CNC machines run Ubuntu, or, the latest, a version of Debian Linux. These machines just run and run… never any problems. It's amazing.

One of these days, the remaining silly old duffers will migrate off of Windows, and…

            John.

“Ubuntu is, of course, British…” actually it’s Manx – Shuttleworth lives here + is building a new house + offices for his company – used to be obvious when it offered the IoM as a time zone! – IoM is not part of UK but is of course one of the islands within the “British Ocean”

Ah yes Francis, but you know that the English always claim anything good that happens round here as being 'British'. Unless we genuinely can claim it as an English triumph that is, in which case you won't get a look in!

                Cheers,
