      I harc from a bygone era of the 60's, then we (at least the company where is did my apprenticship) only had carbide tipped tools. There just coming out then i think as i was sent to an engineering exhibition as part of my training.

      Anyhow cut the waffle…………i have recently bought a Myford ML7, it's a beauty, well i think it is. It's a 1957 model according to the serial number.

      I have also bought four carbide tipped tools, compared to HSS tools bits they are light years better. My question is there does not appear to be any front clearance. As you can turn them round and over this makes sense, normal turning is ok but cutting into the end face is not nice to feel.

          May be stiffness?

          I always use a tailstock centre when facing

          a decent live centre is a "must" for any hobby lathe user IMO

            There are some awful / cheap carbide tools around, can you post some pictures so we can have a look?

              On short workpieces I use the pointed rear of the carbide insert to face.

              Obviously if you need to use the tailstock you can't do it.

                What is the 'pointed rear' of an insert?

                Ady1 mentioned he always uses a centre when he is facing too.

                  With the tips that you can turn over and use the other side, they are normally set with a negative top rake, and need lots of HP to use this way, you need tips with front clearance so you can use then with a flat rack, or slight top rake, you will only have one side of the tool to use.
