Does the lathe have a Dewhurst switch?

Change the label – Rev/Fwd? Or did you mean that it goes in rev in both positions. Could it be that the handle spindle is screwed into the wrong side of the rotor shaft ?

The switch is a dewhurst & partner ltd hounslow, type A

                in forward position it reveres

in reverse position it runs forward

but on a rethink" off is at the back & the switch can't go round to that position so maybe that's the way it works, with the back off the lever pointing at the word.

The straight lever on the Dewhurst switch should screw right through the spindle, and the end that does so has a point on it – this points to the desired direction, and will also point to off.

UNLESS the switch has the shortened form of lever,in which the knob sticks up at an angle and is brazed to a collar that fits over the spindle. The same theory applies, but there is no pointer, but the knob faces the "wrong direction" and the back of the spindle faces the selected direction or off.

If you want the knob to face the selected direction, just unscrew the straight lever and put it back the other way, or take off the short lever and replace it the other way – you will find a grub screw at the back of the collar, which secures it.
