it could be a slip gauge holder for holding a stack of gauges hard to see from that angle and not knowing the size

It may have become estranged from a set like this which greatly extends the usefulness of a set of slip gauges

… and not knowing the size

                  .

At a guess … It’s roughly one and a half ballpoint pens in length angel

+1 for a Slip Gauge Holder, that has escaped from the box and accessories.

                    A most useful item

The jaws are missing. Our inspection department had a complete set, which got used very occasionally, as they did not deem them very accurate.
