A new challenge for answers please.

What are the common widths for machine tool clamping slots; I include mills, lathes, shapers and anything else in that nature?

This is oddly enough a serious question, I can provide a few answers from my own equipment, but there are machines that are different to mine that are bound to have different sizes that I don't have knowledge of

      Regards

      Brian

I have used tiny machines with 10mm slots/8mm bolt up to Plano Mills with 1 1/4" slots/1" bolts. I suppose the most common is a 16mm/5/8" slot and 12mm/1/2" bolt.

There does seem to be a wide range of similar hobby mills (etc) with slots 12mm wide – for M10 fasteners.

            Cheers, Tim

Rotagrip supply tee nuts for 5,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,28,30,32,36,42,48,54, quite a range and I assume they stock them because people buy them. I doubt that the machines in most hobby workshops will use anything bigger than 16mm but I expect most of the smaller sizes will be used somewhere if you count rotary tables and such equipment. Imperial machines will probably have the same range of sizes.

                My Unimat 8 has 8mm slots for M6 fixings, Rotarry tables 10mm slots for M8 and the X3 , SX2.7 and WM280 have 12mm slots for M10.

And just to complicate things some have different depths to both the wide part of the tee and also the top harrow section so a nut that fits one 12mm slot may not fit another 12mm slot.

I have two imperial machines which have 1/2" slots, a shaper and a horizontal mill. Colin

                      Gentlemen,

Thank you all for your efforts, I had no idea the range was so extensive. You have given me all I need to know.

                      Kind regards

                      Brian

I’ve had two milling machines and commonly available Tee nuts were a very poor fit. Luckily making your own is easy and is good machining practice to boot.
