Looks like it could be a Schaublin E type collet. There's several size series of these.

Believe that is a Universal collet. There are a half dozen series. Not much range like ER but hold very well.

Thanks for the suggestions – I'll try searching on-line. The collet came with a 3MT chuck, so some more sizes would be useful.

Just noticed that it is a bit unusual in the way it is slit – ie not all the way through at the top. how is the rest held together?

I noticed the odd slots as well. I decided (possibly erroneously) that the partial slot in the first picture went all the way down and that the two full slots from the bore to the outside did not go all the way down to the bottom of the collet.

It looks to me as if none of the slots in the top originally went all the way through. There is a definite step in the twenty-past position one and a hint of one in the twenty-to one. Maybe someone had a go at it with a hacksaw?

Only one slot is complete (see the picture of the tail end) so it would have a limited closing capacity. It may be home-made as it is not fully-hard, but the chuck does look professional although scruffy. There are no identifying marks at all.

I cannot find dimensions for the obselete Schaublin E or ES series collots, but it does look similar to the photos I found. It may have the same taper as the ER series but I don't have any to make a comparison.

E and ES are in all ways identical to the corresponding ER except they lack the groove that retains them in the nut.

The nut on your one looks different to any E or ES nut I have seen: again the E and ES nuts are almost identical to ER ones. I think your collet has too few slits to be E or ES.

Thanks for the information DC31k – perhaps it's all a home job! I'll stop bothering with it and treat myself to an ER set to add to the Autolock for non-threaded cutters.
