Fit/clearance between axleboxes and horns

      I have finished machining the separate horn castings, and fitted these to my sideframes, and now come to fitting the axleboxes. How much clearance should I allow between the horns and axleboxes?? Also my horns do not appear to be exactly 90 deg to the frames, they vary by about 1-1.5 thou out of parallel, is this acceptable???

          Nice sliding fit will be fine not too tight, I suggest you buy Tim Coles book Model Steam Locomotives this will give you all the info you need,

            I would go a stage further and say an easy sliding fit, the most important bit is giving some clearance between the flanges of the axlebox. In my view 0.010 thou to 0.015 thou is not to much, they should be well radiused to allow the axlebox to cant whilst running over the track. If it is unable to cant it will bind and this could lead to serious consequences for the loco (derailing). Following on, it is just as important that the axle has some end float to allow it to move with the axlebox.

              Hi AG

              Dusty is spot on plenty of play if you intend to run on club tracks, same with coupling rods side clearance and a few thou play on pins except the main crank pin and conecting rod this should be a good running fit.
