I had asked this question some time back but outside of this topic and it didn’t elicit much by way of reply’s. I know Jasonb has started and I think parked his project. PeteH in Oz is actively making one and I’ve got one underway. There are a few following these threads but it’s not clear whether they are actively building or just interested.

Can we do a bit if a survey by replying to this thread?

      1) Actively building – (please advise progress)

      2) Started but put on hold

      3) Started and given up – (reasons would be helpful, but I’m sure we could make a reasonable guess why you would have stopped)

      4) Just an interested observer.

      I’ll start:

I’m actively building, have the chassis complete and running on air, boiler built and inspected, needs some minor re-work. Various ancillary parts made ready for plumbing up. Tender not started.

          Can I add another category?

          5) Planning to so following discussions closely.

In my case when a) skills, b) time and c) my resident financial officer gives the go ahead. I hope to place an order with GLR for the bits this year (maybe Santa in 2012? – beginning to sound like my kids), although I will also have to build some form of track to run it on …

Jason never started one and has no intension to do so, locos are not my thing. My interest was purely as I had been asked by others to answers some queries that the did not feel experienced enough to ask on an open forum.

There is another member here Chris who I know has made a start but not sure what stage he is at.

I know of one other who’s son started but went over to the old Rainhill design after the muck up with the frame drawings after having to scrap the frames.

I’m a 4, if I ever build a small steam job a Lion/Titchfield Thunderbolt or Invicta/Canterbury Lamb might catch my eye.

                Well im a number 1

Its taking time to make much progress due to not only having to find the money to pay for the bits needed for the build but also having to tool up, Milling machine etc.

So far ive done the main frames and about 95% assembled them and have just about collected all the copper needed for the boiler which im hopeing to make a start on soon.

This is not going to be a quick build due to other things taking priority but I will defo finish it

Keep up the good work with the build thread Pete and keep on posting those pictures

Thanks for taking the time to reply everybody. Even with PeteH, in Oz who is making one that’s still not many of us. Hopefully its because people are on holiday and not checking in.

I’m really looking for somebody who has had one in steam, even if it was a complete failure at least we’d all be aware of where we are heading with this. It’s a bit of a worry when the original authors aren’t coming forward on these discussion threads.

Anyway onwards and upwards, and thanks for your time.

Nice one Norm. Looks like a good start you’ve made there in one day. Are you doing a separate build log on any of the forums? It was the opportunity to try making a ‘proper’ boiler that made me start this.

                      regards

No m8 as im not a member of any other model forums ive not been keeping a proper build record.

As im also not a model club member it will never be run in public and therfore not certified so im adopting a diffrent approach to building the boiler than would be the norm.

I decided to part weld and silver solder the boiler as it makes it a lot easier to ensure good joints, especialy on the part of the tube where it is cut up the side to form the fire box outer skin.

I cant help but think that this is a weak point in the boiler and that it will probably fail under pressure so my tube has been sent away to have it tig welded.
When it comes back I will also silver solder the internal joints.

If you take a close look at the fire box in the pic you will see the outside corner butt joints have been welded and the fold joints on the inside soldered.

I know its not the “proper” way to build the boiler but it will do for me lol

With any luck I should have the boiler finished in the next week or two (depends when i get the tube back from being welded) and will try to remember to post some more pics

It turns out I do have that ME. I was at work at the time but realised I could check it out on line then found I had already read and filed the issue. A bit of deja vu for me in the write up.

I do like the approach you are taking for your boiler. I have no idea whether it would meet code, but certainly would overcome the problems I had chasing leaks and feeding silver solder in faster than I could burn $20 notes.

                                                    Hello,

I am joining this thread quite late – but better late than never I guess.

I have just finished a rather tiny steam engine (pictures on my profile) and managed to assemble something close to a workshop.

I had been toying with the idea of a simple engine like 'Tich' for my first attempt at a locomotive but I am glad that I spotted this thread. There is a good chance that I will start one of these engines.

Any tips on how to get more information. For example, if I subscribe, will I be able to see the various drawing details and articles online?

Phil, if you take out a 1yr paper or digital subscription to ME it will give you access to about the last 10 years of ME in digital format which will have all the Northumbrian articles. A search for Northumbrian on this site is also a good idea as various queries are spread about a bit.

Also look at Pete's build diary over on HMEM

May be worth waiting to see if Pete can sort out teh engines lack of traction before you build something that can't pull a loadsad
