      Hi,

Until recently was able to get onto the MEW website almost instantly when clicking on the link. I generally use my iPad for this and look at the digital issues in the magazine viewer.

It now takes almost 2 minutes just to load the website! Am I the only one experiencing this issue? I get it either when on my home wi-fi or if on the 4G network (all signal bars).

      Peter

Can you tell us what "link" you are clicking.

No problems for me though ME has always been a bit slower than other sites from day 1 maybe 2-3 seconds

            .

            Peter,

It all appears to be working fine on my iPad [v1 wi-fi]

I get the same effect if I am logged into the site and I leave it open without using it for a while. It then is extremely slow in coming back again. If I close the tab open a new one and go back to the site it comes back straight away with the login form at the top right.

I think the problem is that if you don't send any traffic for a while it logs you out but Firefox, or whatever, doesn't realise that and doesn't display the login form.

              Russell.

The site usually loads quickly for me (using IE) but for the past few weeks I have been unable to log in and therefore make any posts or view the archive.Today it was working again. I still have not been able to establish if this was a problem with my internet provider or it was a block put on by one of the people running this website. Suggestions would be welcome.

                  Anthony,

If it happens again you could try deleting all cookies associated with model-engineer.co.uk. However it will forget your login name and password so make sure you know them.

If you disable javascript things speed up considerably

A major holdup is crummy advertiser connections trying to get onto the viewing page

The entire net has been a mess recently.
Ebay has been a PITA to surf

I reckon it’s all these new streaming services and video things creating “traffic jams” of data

Thanks everyone for their comments and suggestions. I go through a google search to get to the site every time. Bookmarking has not really made any difference.

I have tried disabling JavaScript and things do go quicker, but the result seems to be that I am unable to view the digital magazine. I am all in favour of advertising (especially stuff that interests me!) but the site does seem crammed full to the brim with it.

The latest is that I disable JavaScript and then navigate to the site. Once the site loads I enable JavaScript again and refresh the page. I have cleared cookies multiple times but that does not seem to make a difference to the speed.

Now, I forgot to mention that I am in Australia, although this should in theory not make such a big difference!

I also cleared my website history a few days ago and reset the store pages setting from 30 days to 1 day which has made a big difference

…we never used to have these trubbles…

Whether I clear website history or not does not seem to affect the speed of loading this website very much. But I am accessing this website from across the North Sea, and most (all?) UK websites are slow to access, so for me it is internet traffic that determines how fast I can access this website.

                                Peter,

iPad 3 using Terra browser to browse this and other similar sites.

I have the same problem occasionally and all I do is power down then back up again and problem solved.

Do also check that you have enough free storage, as recently, I was inadvertently trying to run 12 apps in the background with only 1GB free.

Deleted a load of audiobooks I'd listened to and freed up 8GB.

Don't also forget, that site designers/owners are adding more and more cr*p to bling their pages for no other reason than the now all too prevalent 'Me too, me too' mentality.

Geoff – Need to make more biltong then SHMBO's afternoon out, with me in tow.

                                  Hi OuBallie,

Thanks for that. I did try the power off just now but still the same story… I have about 60Gb free space so that won't be an issue.

Went and looked at the Americans' site Home Machinist and it flies. I will explore their offer and weigh it up against my MEW subscription… Not much point staring at the blue bar slowly crawl painfully to the right. But then, hey, only a few years ago it took five minutes to retrieve emails with a modem. What do we customers know anyway.

Back into the real workshop now, have a mess to sort out.

                                  Good luck with the Biltong!

                                  Cheers,

                                  Peter

You should be aware that the Home Shop Machinist digital edition does not allow any printing.

It looks like the UK system is unable to cope with the volume of traffic

Yesterday was great for me, I zipped about and did stuff on a whole bunch of sites which are usually no better than a good 56k dialup connection nowadays

…but yesterday was a bank holiday

Today everyone is back to normal at work etc and things are back to UK PLCs standard 56k dialup mode
