Hello all, I am trying to find a set of plans for a vertical copper boiler for my 3″ scale tractor/lorry. I have looked at the usual drawing suppliers Reeves, Blackgates etc but can’t find anything suitable. The drawings I have are for a horizontal welded steel boiler I feel that a vertical one would look a lot better, and I would be able to build it myself.

      Regards Mark P.

Further to my above post I have trawled the internet until I lost the will to live and didn’t turn anything up! I know that there are plans out there but blowed if I can find one.

Have you seen the Clayton lorry drawings?

Haining's "Countryman's Steam" has verticals for a Sentinel, Caradoc and 3" Merryweather. In steel but these couild be a basis for a copper version

As well as the Clayton mentioned there is the 3" Atkinson from Reeves

There is also the Reeves RV62 drawings that build into a nice 6" dia vertical copper boiler that could be adapted from static to vehicle use

Hello Bazyle, I did come across the Clayton drawings but I don’t need a full set just the boiler. I’m not really to fussed about a superheater as the drawings I have don’t have one.

Unless you're a coded welder (to te appropriate code), you might find difficulty getting insurance if you weld it yourself. Ask whoever is going to do the final inspection before you set off down that road

If you don't want to buy a whole set of drawing look through teh various ME and EMI indexs to see which issues the boilers were covered in and get the mags on e-bay or one of the second hand mag sellers

Jason had a look at the RV62 drawing don’t know how I missed it, but I think it may fill the bill. How much can you deviate from the origional design?
Duncan I don’t intend to build a welded steel boiler, hence the reason I would like a copper one.

I suppose if you don't increase pressure or any surfaces areas and don't go thinner with any of the materials you should be OK but run it past whoever will certify the boiler before cutting metal.

There is a very good build of the Rv62 on MEM forum with lots of photos but you will just need to join to see them as they are posted as attachments.

Hello Jason, I have ordered John Haining’s book. As my wagon is based round his Suffolk dredging tractor it is apt.
