Would someone please tell me what version of Windows I need to run the Allan Wallace and Charlie Dockstader’s valve gear simulators as I want to run them in Bootcamp mode on an iMac running OS X 10.10 ?

I’ll have to buy a copy of Windows so would like to know if it works before I spend any money.

I know it's supposed to work in theory but has anyone actually done this and if so where there any problems?

I've just downloaded the first few of the Docstader for windows files and they seem to run ok on Win 8.1

It would have to be very old not to run as the program itself is old.

Like Ady, I use Win XP Pro with no problems with any of the simulators out there. I used to use the Dockstader simulators with Win 98. Can't comment on any of the later versions of Windoze though as I've never used them.

                  Thanks for the responses.

Good to know it works with Windows 8.1 thought it might have had problems past XP, I never did install Vista when I had a windows system.

Next part of the question is as I now only have an iMAC I need to run Windows in a Bootcamp partition on OSX, has anyone done this?

This and similar sites may be of use to you

I ran one of these applications under wine on Linux recently. Out of curiosity so don't ask which one but it it had lots of versions for different gear arrangements.

I used a helper application called q4wine as it's easy to set where an application can find it's associated files but the same thing can be done directly with wine.

There are other simulators shown here

Some might run under one of the dos emulators that are around.

To make Bill Hall's valve gear programs run fully on Win7 I had to use Dosbox. Don't ask me how to make this run on a MAC, I guess you need a dos emulator.

Without dosbox the programs would run but could not access or amend saved data files

Been using Oracle Virtualbox under Linux for years to run antique Windows software, and I have never had problems – much easier to use than Whine. I can't speak for Apple (can't afford one), but there is a version available for Apple (use Ady1's link above).

edit: sorry – forgot to mention you need a copy of Windows to install in the virtualbox after installation – might be a killer.

I have used the suggestion from John W1 and installed WINE on my iMAC and then downloaded the Charlie Dockstader Simulator and it works.

Haven’t looked at the other simulators yet but I can run Windows progs now on a MAC OSX without having to install Windows as WINE lets you just execute the programs and I don’t have to worry about Windows viruses either and it didn’t cost a penny.

Thanks John W1 and everybody else who contributed suggestions.

Took a couple of hours to install as I had to wake a few brains cells up from retirement hibernation but worth the time taken.
