I am building a twin cylinder steam engine at the moment. The plans call for twin throw crankshaft with the crankpins at 90° to each other with the split webs being clamped to the crankpins/journals using screws.

However, as I am making the model larger than the plans I would like to press fit / loctite the parts. I have in the past made a single throw crankshaft this way but a twin looks more of a challenge. I would prefer not wasting time experimenting on such a fabrication so can anyone link me to some relevant words and hopefully pics that might help?

        Thanks in advance.

          Rik,

Press fit suggests forcing together under pressure, requiring careful machining. I take it that the / means either force fit or loctite as loctite is used where there is a small clearance. I have heard of several instances where loctite failed in min. locos but that could have been the fault of the modellers in not using proper cleaning chemical prior to glueing or incorrect glue clearance. One of the Std gauge preservation groups used industrial glue on their 08 class diesels and it failed! I would use a cross pin every time.

Or, for a proper job, machine from solid ?

The Stuart D10 plans describe a method for fabricating a crankshaft of the type you describe. If I can find the notes I'll drop you a PM
