SX3 Bearing change

Hello,have obtained a SX3 mill and am in the process of stripping,cleaning,lube, adjusting etc.I want to change the spindle bearings for some of better quality and know that replacements(SKF,FAG etc) are available from Simply Bearings,the spindle is dismantled and all the bearings removed except for the lower taper bearing outer race.There is very little exposed “shoulder”to put a drift onto or press onto and @ approx.55mm dia is probably too big for the more common slide hammer extractor.Have considered heating it all up and applying ice to the race ring an then trying to drift it out on what little shoulder there is,or slotting it with a dremel and cutting disc and attempting to break the ring.Any other ideas would be very welcome.Thanks Chris

Hi Chris, you could try running a bead of weld on the cup face where the rollers run, and then letting it cool down. This method srinks the cup. You could also weld a longish bolt to the cup with a plate to take up the width of the cup and draw it out using a tube on the outside face to pull agaisnt. Take precaution not to get the weld anywhere else though.     Hope this is of help.

Weld a large washer onto the bearing ring that is greater than the spindle then support on the washer to press the ring off.

Make a steel turning which fits the cone of the bearing and which has an an extension to hold it by or press against . Loctite the cone into the bearing and use the extension to pull or drift the bearing cone out . The extension can have any arrangement of slots or threads to make use easier . If the turning and the bearing cone are both properly degreased before loctiting the bond will be almost unbreakable .

Thanks for the quick replies,hav’nt got welding gear myself but should be able to find someone to do it.Might initially try the loctite idea from Michael regards Chris
