      @iant

On Friday I’m taking delivery of a new Seig SX3.5ZP from Arc Euro Trade.

I’ve been thinking about a new Mill for some time and the discounts being offered helped decide things. Whenever someone asks here what size of machine to buy, the general advice has been to get the largest machine you can afford and house. In terms of affordability, the price difference between the smallest SX2.7 and the SX3.5 was not very large, given the larger table size, increased speed range and the power head lift/table feed (I’m getting on!).

Housing it has been more of a problem, as my garage/workshop is already stuffed full. A week of moving, dismantling and cleaning out has improved things a little but not much. I’ve made one trip to the Tip already and will go again today. All those ‘come in handy’ items are finally meeting their maker. However, hopefully there is now room for the delivery.

The reason for my post, is that although the SX3.5ZP will hopefully meet all my expected needs, it may be a little bit unusual/unique. Most Seig owners here seem to have varients of the SX2.7 and SX3. As far as I can see, only ARC offer the SX3.5ZP in the UK and it was their most expensive mill, so possibly didn’t sell in huge numbers.

In the US, the Little Machine Shop offer the HiTorque 6770 Deluxe Large Bench Mill, which has the DRO (but not the table feed) and is based on the same underlying SX3.5 design. There may be other Seig suppliers in the US but I haven’t searched any further yet.

The reason for my post, is I’m wondering if there are other SX3.5 owners here, as I’d like to feel a little bit less ‘on my own’ in some respects at the moment.   🙂

      Regards,

        Well, problem solved (unfortunately)

ARC have just called to tell me that the SX3.5 isn’t coming tomorrow. It turns out the machine they had ‘In Stock’ was returned faulty and is uncrated and in need of repair. Very disappointing.

So IF I choose another ARC machine – should it be the SX2.7L or the SX3?

Seems like an easy choice but I’m not so sure, what do others here think please?

        Regards,

          Hello IanT,

Just to clarify, it wasn’t returned faulty!

After checking, this was a machine which was sent to a person who has certain disability. His mother then phoned us, requesting us to take it back. It was difficult for her to understand why her son had ordered it, as it was difficult to get it through the door, and that her son had made a mistake. On return, we noted that certain bits of tool kit were missing and paint had been chipped off certain areas, and the crate was damaged. The machine is fully functional.

When a member of my team went to check the machine before dispatch, he realised that this is the return machine, hence our Ian called to discuss with you to cancel the order.

Thank you Ketan – I obviously got the wrong impression.

I’ll talk to Ian when he gets back from lunch..

            Regards,

Of the two other options I would go with the SX3. However if Ketan would be willing to come to an agreeable arrangement with the SX3.5 that he has then go with that

                Ian,

I recall that when this machine was introduced, Ketan only allowed sales to competent or ‘more competent’ users.  As such I expect it is still tops as far as ARC machines go.🙂

I would go for the 3.5, if I was in your shoes.

Can’t believe you remembered that. Our anxiety levels were high when this machine was first introduced. This has reduced over time, especially once we stopped offering this machine with factory fitted limited functionality DRO, and also once market understanding of brushless machine use – speeds, feeds and DOC has improved, (moving away from traditional), as demonstrated by Jason Ballamy.

                    Yup, SX3 all day long.
