Is it my imagination or is it the case that modern day sandpaper bought in the highstreet is just not up to the job, it having very little inherent strength compared to the quality product? My experience shows that it will break up with slightest application of pressure. What are other peoples views on the topic

If its not got 3m or Norton or made in switzerland on the backing paper its most likely c–p.IMHO.

Probably for safety so that it falls apart if you try to eat it.

Old chaps believe everything modern is inferior.  Progressively rose-tinting the past is part of the ageing process.   The world was better when we were young because we were fit and understood how it worked. Now I’m ill and unfamiliar with modern developments.  Change is unwelcome and I want the world to stay as just it was.  This old dog struggles to learn new tricks…

I used sandpaper yesterday.  Made in Canada, not by 3M or Nortons, and it’s fine.  Poor old grandad forgets that DIY sandpaper wasn’t brilliant in the 70s, and – as always – it pays not to buy too cheap.

Anyone who believes old engineering was better never drove a Morris Marina!

A good old style engine, there used to be hundreds of them powering Broads hire cruisers, quite a few still about, most of the available new parts are now made in India where a few legacy Ambassador diesel taxis are still running.

I bought some ‘wet n dry’ from toolstation, 10 sheet packs cheap. (there is a clue there!) so I bought a few packs.

I gave up with it and bought 3 sheets from my local motor factors who sell proper stuff, 1 sheet of which did more than the 10 from toolstation. Never again.
