      Hi Guys,

I have a Myford S7 with gearbox and power cross slide.

I want to cut a 1 mm thread ! Easy, no, I'm getting very confused by the plate inside the end cover, which gives mm pitches and refers to the gear on the gearbox shaft. The plate gives gear "X" as 60 teeth and gives change gear sizes along with gearbox settings for 1mm pitch thread.

The gear "X" on my lathe has 72 teeth ! Am I supposed to remove it and replace it with the 60 tooth gear ?

      Thanks in advance:

yep, you got it…..put the gear it says in the place it says….just make the train as it instructs.
I’m sure a more detailed reply will follow…21t 63t and 127t gear suggestions too

Perhaps also read this thread for an easier and cheaper method.

RDG sell the 33 & 34 tooth gears as mentioned in the thread above, also for sale via their ebay shop if you prefer.

I've a pair of John's originals which I use on my Warco 720 (Super 7 clone) lathe.

              Regards

              Bill

                Hello John,

peak4 [Bill] gave you a useful thread, it is worth reading through and to blow my own trumpet a little, my book is also available via Arc Euro at £12.50 plus postage. It gives set up tables for other pitches than metric on Myford and other lathes in that size range.

For now though, fit a 34T gear instead of the 24T, set the gearbox controls to give 36 tpi and the lathe will cut a pitch of 0.999 mm. You don't need to disturb the wide 72 gear into the gearbox

                Regards

                Brian

                  Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the links and advice given. It is very confusing when the chart and the gears indicated don't match what is actually fitted to the machine.

Swapping the 24 for 34 is probably least trouble. I actually only need four turns of thread.

                  Thanks guys.
