Ok for anyone interested I managed to get a single phase motor off a compressor for nothing, and I've managed to get it to turn in both directions using the barrel switch, all I had to do is go back over my electrical principles coursework from my btec and it turns out I had the answers all along, so it was happily milling away when there was a bang and a tinkle followed by loss of rotation, pulled the mill apart and the input shaft that has the three gears operated by the selector lever had sheared, from what I can tell it's had a hard life and is possibly a replacement part, so next job is to machine a new one, unless anyone has a spare, anywho if anyone needs info on how to have a single phase motor turn in both directions send me a pm or if I get a chance I'll write a post here

Sorry to hear about your trials and tribulations

A separate post about reversing a single phase motor would be very useful indeed… when you have the time of course

Ok I've got my notes together, where would be the best place to put a thread so as people can find it without too much trouble?

Hi Peter. Not sure if you still pop in here but I have a Centec 2a as well, and a 1.5hp single phase motor I want to wire up.

Also have the barrel switch, just wondered if you ever wrote up the instructions? Also need to change the vertical head spindle bearings if you ever went near these?

            Cheers, Paul.

The Centec is a lovely little machine. We had one where I worked and it ran for about 8 hours a day. The head got very warm but it worked fine. It leaked oil from the spindle quite a bit. I would suggest a transformer to run a 24volt light bulb or possibly a LED version.
