      Hi all.

New to forum but not engineering but new to model engineering.

I bought a second hand mill engine model that's in Ok condition bit too much slack etc. My main question is about fittings the globe style valve on the steam chest is well pass it's best but I am having trouble finding anything I can use online as I seem to only find upto 1/4 inch where my fitting is 1/2 inch thread.

So far I either going to make new chest plate with 1/4 rather than the current 1/2 inch OR find a plan for a globe valve and machine my own.

      What would you all think?

      Thanks

      Gavin

A 1/2" globe valve is bigger than most model size valves. There are lots of suppliers for commercially made globe valves. Just check if they are suitable for your pressure and temperature rating.

I have not seen your engine. Is the valve in proportion to the size of the engine or does it look big. (Perhaps the original owner just used a normal valve). An option is to use a 1/2" to 1/4" reducing nipple and fit a 1/4" valve instead of making a new chest plate.

          Paul.

Sounds like an interesting engine can you post a picture.

Is the thread 1/2" major diameter or 1/2" BSP/NPT there is quite a difference. 1/4" BSP thread is actually a bit over 1/2" outside diameter at 0.531" though may measure a bit less.

Would also help to know the pitch of the thread as if 1/2 dia it could be 26, 32 or even 40 TPI or others.

If it is 1/4" BSP then RA BAker do them

Hi all thanks for replying I've uploaded a picture hope it works.they are of before stripped it all down.

The valve does look oversized. I will get the thread measured later and let you know.

                Thanks

Gavin, go up to the top green line, you'll see albums/pic of camera, click there and start an album, down loaded direct from your PC or what ever. I'm not getting your photo here.

It is an old beast, I like the reversing gear.

I'd say thats a 1/2" or there abouts diameter thread so could well be the 1/4" BSP I suggested.

Its also not a globe valve, more a 1/4 turn "cock"

The one you have uses a taper to seal the spindle to the body, that may just need lapping again to get it working but a globe valve would be a better option as it gives easier control of the flow

Hi Jason yeah I knew it wasn't a globe valve just didn't know what to call it but u are right it's a tapered 1/4 turn.it's been damaged so bad by who ever removed all the paint take alot of polishing it remove all the details on it.but I want a globe valve for same reason you said better control

I post more pictures as I rebuild

I also like the reversing gear one of main reasons I got it

Also known in engineering as 'Plug valve' as well as 1/4 turn cock…

                              Plug valve.

thank you to everyone that's replied I will try a 1/4 BSP hopefully it good . I will start a new thread showing my progress in getting this lovely model back to its former glory.

                                thanks
