Electromagnetic Properties

I only got interested in this topic through reading an HSN article about the magnet measurements as it seemed to rather miss the point about the magnetic circuit design.  The more I read about these clocks the more I’m amazed at how much of a following they have.  I think the basic design premise is flawed, how can a clock with so much magnetic material, a socking great coil, and 10s of milliamps drive current be so marginal? And making them in production must have been difficult too given the complexity of the assembly.
