Drill bit grinder

I have a lot of drills which have been collected over the years, most have been hand sharpened by myself. I use to hand grind drills to a very good standard when in the engineering days, some I've used lately from the 70s that leave no burr when drilling steel.

As my eyesight is not as good today and shaky hands can a recommendation for a drill sharpener be given. Are the electric type that sell for £30 any good or the £20 type that are used with the bench grinder.

I was thinking of making the Harold Hall grinding rest, but I've got other things on the go at the moment so I would rathe buy one. But if his grinding rest would be better than the ones I've mentioned then I will make one later,but I would rather buy one than make one.

I bought the Sealey SMS2008 fron Ebay, prices vary,so do your homework…. They are very good for bits from 3mm upwards….Cant say anymore than that…

The cheap Machinmart type for around £25 is rubbish, there is no way of making sure the drill is ground equally….I gave mine away after the first time of using!

Although I was somewhat dubious, I purchased one of **THESE*** some time ago. I was, and still am, very pleased with it – it does a really good job of sharpening my drills.

I can't remember where I purchased it but my link shows an identical item.

I have one of those as well, the only issue I have had is that the grinding wheel needed to be repositioned on the shaft. I am thinking about knocking out some sort of setting tool for it.

The original Picador drill grinding jigs [come up on Ebay from time to time] are fairly easy to use, the clones are really not the best!

I was tempted by the Drill Doctor but picked up a Dormer 108 for the same money, takes up a bit more room but sharpens beautifully.

The Sealey unit is a variation on the Drill Doctor or vice versa, but doesn't have the price tag….

This is the ***VIDEO*** I saw that prompted me to buy the SMS2008. I thought it would be too expensive for me, but when I checked the price here in UK I ordered one immediately, and never regretted it.

Just in case it crossed your mind, I have no connection with Sealey or any retailer or wholesaler.

That's the Sealey SMS2008 which costs £50 delivered. Doesn't look fantastically accurate but probably better than doing it by eye. Main drawback is the max size of 13mm. Vaguely tempted to get one at some point….

Had a Drill Doctor before the workshop got trashed – yet another N Sea casualty!! Still have the video tape around somewhere. Only used it a couple of times and it was OK but I wouldn't get another unless it was ultra cheap. I have a Miller Falls jig to use with a bench grinder. Not yet used it but it looks well thought out and manufactured.
