Just a thought, having converted my Myford DH to stepper operation using Steve Ward's design, you don't need to be able to disengage the worm as the controller gives you a continuous rotation function.

Eureka !! I have just discovered that my division plate is indeed double sided . Without this forum I would have never known this ! The latest instruction does not say where to fill the worm/wheel cavity with oil . I'll have to investigate this , maybe access is gained by removing some screw or stud fastening. Maybe there is a filling point on the underside of the pivoting section ?  My head spindle clamping is not hydraulic and is the same as Steve's. Seems only the later heads have hydraulic spindle clamping. Many thanks to all concerned re. the double sided plate.

Just an update for information purposes :-

The Hofmann UTH spindle has a 7deg 7min 30sec taper with 36h6 register dia at the chuck mounting face. This is the same angle that is used on camloc spindles but of course the dia is much smaller. Also has a M.T. #3 in the spindle bore.

Hi, just to further the Hofmann knowledge base here does anyone know if they are prone to leaks of the clamp oil? If so where the usual culprit part might be?

I've just acquire a Hofmann myself which is empty of oil – it may just have been drained but this seems odd. I bought this from Rotagrip in Birmingham who have a number of Hofmann's in stock with/without tailstocks. They have several other types there Mecatecnica etc. Many of the smaller Hofmann's there have the Bridgeport drive shafts.

Following the oil advice earlier in this thread Alex oil in Corby seem to have direct BP Energol replacements fluids http://www.alexoil.co.uk/bp-pre-iso-iso-lubron-oil-reference-guide_c128.aspx

            cheers

Just to be a party pooper for anyone getting a Vertex Rotary Table, I have had no mechanical problems with my HV6, when used for dividing. BUT, Had a major problem when trying to produce a 13T gear. After several failures, made up a spreadsheet on EXCEL, and found eight errors or omissions in the chart supplied. Needless to say, one of them was for 13 divisions. Posted a thread on this, and Neil Wyatt posted my spreadsheet on the Stub Mandrel site.

So just check the chart before cutting metal, in case your work is one of the incorrect entries!

                Hi,

My guess is that you have a 100mm center height UTH. For the 125mm center height unit it has a MT5 internal taper and the outside external taper is something I would very much like to know!

I have been in contact with Hofmann and have always had a fast response but that specific question about the external taper has never been specifically answered. I would very much like to buy a chuck mounting back plate for it. The best I can find from the internet plus the documents they sent me was:

                1. For both the 100mm and 125mm center height dividing heads a compatible chuck should be to "DIN 6350".

                2. It is referred to as a "short taper". if memory serves me correctly I think that it is not camlock. D1-4 which would be the size of camlock D short taper suitable for a MT5 internal taper (D1-3 being too small) and D1-5 being larger than measured.) However I do not have my head to hand to measure.

Does anyone know what the correct reference for the external taper is? So I can buy a backplate to mount up a chuck. I did not know rotagrip had some of these in stock. I expect I would buy a backplate from them if they knew which I should buy. Has anyone asked them?

                Thanks,

                Steve

Re chuck fitting number references :-

DIN 6350 describes the short cylindrical recess in the back of the chuck and the bolt hole PCD etc. Basically the information needed to fit a backplate.

DIN 5027 is short taper mount with bayonet style fittings via studs and flanged nuts.

DIN 5029 is short taper mount with cam-loc type fittings.

The taper and diameters are the same for DIN 5027, DIN 5029, British BS4442, I.S.O. R702, American A, American B and American D series mounts. For BS4442 and I.S.O R702 part 1 covers A and B bolt up fittings, part 2 covers D series cam-loc (both being same as the American equivalent) and part 3 covers the bayonet versions with flanged nuts.

its all a bit complicated. My Googling finds various chuck and backplate catalogues with adequate examples but no single, complete descriptive text.

                    Clive,

                    That has helped. Thank you.
