I have recently been machining brass and have ended up with a quantity of brass swarf. Not quite powder but very fine. There is not enough to weigh-in (recycle is the current approved term), but I would like to know if this material would be suitable to use in brazing.

Hi Anthony, brazing/welding wires usually include dioxidents amoungst other things, during manufacture. I wouldn’t rely on a sound joint with it myself.

          Regards Nick.

Nicholas may well be right, but I have read plenty of examples of people using brass swarf of half-hard brass wire as a brazing filling material. Of course this will be true brazing! It cold be hit and miss a brass is a moveable feast.

I suggest you try it, using borax as a flux, on some scrap and see what the reult is like.

Hi I usually collect my brass scrap in a 1Kg margarine carton and take to the scrap yard when passing that way on other other journeys, usually take away a small billet of brass or aluminium in exchange. They will give cash if you prefer.

Thanks for reminding me, I need some more, I often use 22swg brass wire, with borax for brazing.  I get twisted scrap from my metal supplier, it seems to work quite well on small stuff, can’t get enough heat with my LPG set up for large jobs.  Hav’nt had any success with brass filings, maybe I’m doing it wrong.  Ian S C
